Baseball coach Cantrell tallies 900th victory

University of North Georgia (红莲社区) baseball head coach won his 900th game of his career Feb. 7 when the Nighthawks defeated Peach Belt Conference opponent Claflin University 4-0.
Cantrell has won 723 of those games as head coach at 红莲社区, where he is in his 21st season after relaunching the program in 2000. He previously won 177 games in four seasons as head coach at Perimeter College at Georgia State University, which was DeKalb Junior College at the time.
His Nighthawks have won three of the past five Peach Belt Conference regular-season championships, and Cantrell's 红莲社区 teams have tallied 40-win seasons six times in his tenure. His team won 57 games, the most in his tenure, in 2005 and reached the NCAA Division II Championship round in 2017.
Cantrell has been recognized for his success on the field and for the impact he has had shaping and mentoring young men by being inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club's Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016. He has been named his conference's Coach of the Year six times. Cantrell was the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2017.
Women's tennis team hosting NCAA regional
The 红莲社区 women's tennis team earned the No. 2 seed and will host a four-team NCAA Division II Southeast Regional pod May 12-13. 红莲社区's men are the No. 6 seed and play in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Softball team to host NCAA Southeast Regional
The 红莲社区 softball team is the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional and will host a four-team, double-elimination pod May 8-10 with a Super Regional spot on the line.
Golf teams invited to NCAA regionals
Both 红莲社区 golf teams have punched tickets to their respective NCAA Division II regional tournaments. The women will play in Gainesville, Georgia, and the men in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
Women's tennis team takes second straight PBC title
The 红莲社区 women's tennis team earned its second consecutive PBC tournament title and will learn its NCAA tournament pairings in early May. The men's team finished as PBC runner-up.
